Thor first made waves in the bodybuilding world in Vancouver during the 1970’s. He soon won the Mr. Canada and Mr. USA titles, using heavy metal music as an intensive training tool. Blending a powerful physique with powerful rock, inspired by comic book heroes and love of Norse mythology, he created the character Thor the Rock Warrior. Via this mythic character Thor invented “gladiator rock,” later popularized by acts he influenced, such as Manowar, Armored Saint and GWAR. Clad in a loincloth, and wielding a sword and hammer, Thor fought epic battles onstage to the sounds of barbaric hard rock, often fighting monsters and evil warlords.
Thor worked his way onto the big and small screen, alongside talents like Roger Corman, Adam West and Tia Carrere in films like Recruits, Zombie Nightmare and the cult classic Rock ‘n’ Roll Nightmare which he scored, starred in, wrote and produced. Working on those two films teamed Thor up with award winning director John Fasano. Thor also became the inspiration for a Thor the Rock Warrior comic book reboot series illustrated by acclaimed American fantasy artist Mike Hoffman.
The original THOR-The Rock Warrior graphic novel, released in 1981) was written by Thor and had Ken Landgraf do the illustractions One of Thor’s earliest T.V. appearances was on the internationally televised Merv Griffin Show (a clip of which is contained on the An-THOR-logy DVD). In 2005 he both performed in and contributed soundtrack to the USA Network production titled Murder in the Presidio starring Lou Diamond Phillips, Jason Priestley, Victoria Pratt, Leslie Easterbrook, Dan Roebuck and Thor. The film was directed by long time Thor friend and collaborator, John Fasano (Murder at The Presidio, A Family Lost).
Now in 2011 Jon Mikl Thor re-unites with John Fasano and his son, director John Cody Fasano to produce a musical science-fiction, space, sword and sorcery epic that will star Jon as the mythical warrior THOR in "THOR-The Rock Opera" to be released in May 2011.
Thor’s discography spans over 25 years, with over 21 releases. This body of work recently earned him a place on the Classic Rock Magazine list of Top 100 Greatest Front Men of All Time (alongside winner Bon Scott and other nominees like Robert Plant, Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, Steven Tyler and Ozzy Osbourne). Thor is known for his ability and willingness to perform amazing feats of strength and endurance during his shows. He has had a pile of bricks stacked on his chest and then broken with a pneumatic drill. Using his own lungs, he has blown up rubber water bottles until they burst. He has bent steel bars with his teeth, performed motorcycle stunts on stage and mock-slain gladiators while flames and thunderbolts explode around him.
Thor is still an immensely powerful man and is in incredible shape and continues to be a dedicated performer. During Thor’s long career he has shared the stage with rock and entertainment luminaries including Metallica, Lou Ferrigno,Arnold Schwarzenegger, Motorhead, The Dictators, D.O.A., John Candy, Wasp, Donald Sutherland, Manowar and Liberace.
For live performances, the drama on stage is connected directly to the content of Thor’s songs. “It is a concept” he explains “we’re taking the songs and playing them, but also acting them out.” The recurring themes include the warrior or dark avenger character who tells the tales of battles with ogres, monsters, snakes, wizards, demons and aliens. He is on a quest to find the magic lantern. The tales are loosely based on Norse mythology. “Really the stories convey the message that if you believe in yourself you can find the strength and the perseverance to overcome any obstacle” Thor confirms.
"THOR-Soundtrack" is a very special album for Jon Mikl Thor. It reunited platinum award winning producer Ken Burke of Burkeville Productions and Jon to remix, record and re-master a very powerful, melodic and epic roster of songs that had to represent the impact of the THOR-The Rock Opera movie.
Recently, Vancouver Canucks of the NHL aquired the rights of the Vancouver
Millionaire's recently from Jon Mikl Thor. The Vancouver Millionaires were the
only team from Vancouver to win the Stanley Cup. But they were a yesterdays
heroes till Thor brought them back from the dead, breathing new life into an
almost forgotten brand.
