NOAH CARTER (DK)
Saturday 30.6.2018 @ Seinäjoki, Provinssi Festival
Formerly known as an ancient stomping ground for Vikings, now operating as a haven for contemporary minimalism — hip-hop is thriving in Scandinavia. As a native New Yorker, it is fascinating to find hip-hop influencing and shaping the youth culture in Copenhagen. One of the prominent figures doing this shaping is Noah Carter, one of the strongest rappers in Danish rap; drawing home the bass-induced trap beats from the dirty south and the gritty grime locale of the UK, all while simultaneously crafting a new Nordic balladry that is entirely unique to him alone.
Noah’s ambiguous rap notoriety emerged through a local mantra, #FreeNoahCarter, uttered as a customary shout-out by comrades of the famed B.O.C crew. While members of B.O.C trail-blazed the Nordic music scene, Carter found himself locked up behind bars in the Danish penitentiary system. Since his release in 2014, Carter has reclaimed stolen time by manifesting a musical niche as Denmark’s leading rap artist, bidding on an international sound. Through orchestrated hits such as “B.O.” and “Do You,” coupled with the release of his debut album Couch Dreams, one can fathom the hype surrounding Carter’s distinct sound and musical craftsmanship.
Undeterred by the obvious flair as the Danish born rapper with mixed origins (half Ivorian, quarter African-American and quarter Korean), Carter’s diverse upbringing has cultivated a rare space in Copenhagen as a vanguard talent, placing him in a league of his own. As our interview unfolds, I begin to see Carter as a tastemaker who has somehow managed to find a way to pursue hip-hop through every bit of the English language, no matter the personal cost or industry implications. Our conversation drifts between fanatic hip-hop discourse and larger political themes as he casually exudes an intimate vibe that can be zealous as well as cautious and considered.
